1. Narrate the circumstances that led to the abandoning of the aged in shining.

The country Shining was governed by a despotic leader. He was a great warrior but he had a real and cowardly shrinking from anything suggestive of failing health and strength. This caused him to send out a cruel proclamation, The proclamation was to put to death all aged people, On those days the custom of abandoning old people to die was not uncommon, So, this order filled everyone with sorrow in the province.

2. Describe the farmer’s painful journey up the mountain.

Just at sundown, when the farmer completed his work, he took a quantity of unwhitened rice which was the principal food for the poor, and he cooked, dried it and tied it in a square cloth, which he swung in a bundle around his neck along with a gourd filled with cool, sweet water. He lifted his mother on his back and started his painful journey up the mountain. The road was crossed and recrossed by many paths made by the hunters and wood cutters. In some place, he lost his way and was confused but he did not worry about it. He went on climbing upward towards the summit called Obatsuyama, the mountain of the “abandoning of the aged” This was the painful journey of the farmer.
